John Morris Memorial Concert needs your help

31 May 2013 - 22 June 2013

Below you will see a press release from The John Morris Foundation. They really need your help to find singers and sell tickets for the concert at the end of this month. Our drummer Ian Wilson is part of the organising group and along with his and John's associations with Leeds Amateurs we ask for your support for this event. Please read on and do what you can to help.

Wakefield-born John Morris touched the lives of so many people as he guided thousands of people through stage musicals in the great world of amateur musical theatre. He was well-known and greatly loved by many people taking the stage in various operatic societies across West Yorkshire from the mid 70s onwards.   John further spread the joy of singing in West Yorkshire when he set up the amateur show choir “Sing Live” (formerly known as The Northern Music & Theatre Company)

In June of 2012, after a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer, John Morris passed away and the John Morris Foundation was set up at his request in order that his legacy might live on in the manner that he intended.

A non-profit group, the JMF was founded by a group of John's closest friends for the express purposes of ensuring the continuation of John's dream and raising money to help eradicate the disease that claimed his life and A Memorial Concert was held in his honour in Orlando in October of last year, with all profits going to his nominated charity “The American Cancer Charity”.

But that was not enough; when they heard about it, his friends in England began to call for this concert to be performed in the venue where it all started – Leeds Town Hall. They wanted to sing in it, and hundreds more wanted to sit and watch it in honour of John’s memory. So The John Morris Foundation is pleased to announce a Leeds Town Hall performance of The UK Tribute Concert to John Morris.

On June 23rd, at 7:30pm, the band will strike up the opening chords of John’s signature tune from “Starlight Express”, before we are taken on an evening’s journey through some of the most popular songs from the shows that John brought to his thousands of singers.

Our host for the evening is one of John’s oldest friends – Phil Cole, who has many West End and International stage credits to his name including Beauty and The Beast, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jekyll & Hyde, Fame, and many others along with large-scale concert and television appearances.

Featured Soloist Broadway star Connie Kunkle is an old favourite with audiences of John’s concerts.   Connie starred as the Narrator opposite Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and she also sang and danced her way through starring roles in A Grand Night for Singing, Me and My Girl, Annie Get Your Gun, and many others.

With other “surprise” soloist names secured, it’s sure to be a night of fond memories, with lots of smiles and probably a tear or two as well!

But it’s not just about selling tickets to go and see this great event – the extra-specially good news is that singers from the area can take part in this concert too!

For full details of how to do that they should visit the John Morris Foundation Website on

http://www.johnmorrisfoundation.co.uk/

All the information they will need is there, along with more details about how John’s legacy continues to work.

Tickets are available by booking online or by phone at The Leeds Town Hall Booking Office on 0113 224 3801

The booking line is open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.
